In Living Colors
In this collection titled In Living Colors, I invite you into a vibrant exploration of 90s urban culture — where color, music, and attitude take center stage.
This body of work was conceived specifically for Le Terminus Artistique, and carries a personal weight. As a woman, a Black woman, and as an artist, I often struggle to find — or claim — my place in a society that hasn’t always made room for me. Creating this series became a way to reclaim space, to let these women take up room unapologetically — and to let them carry me through this project. They remind me that I, too, belong. That I am, in fact, right where I need to be.
In Living Colors draws its spirit from the groundbreaking 90s television show In Living Color, which reshaped the comedy landscape by giving space and visibility to Black creativity. Among its most iconic elements, the Fly Girls stood out — not just for their dance, but for their presence. Their strength came from how they moved, how they stood, how they existed. They didn’t ask for permission — they just were. Bold, magnetic, effortless.
This quiet strength is the heartbeat of the collection. The women I portray are not heroines. They’re not trying to prove anything. They live, they breathe, they are — in small gestures, in still moments. A glance, a pause, a presence that fills the space without needing to shout.
The colors I use — yellow, orange, and blue — are not there to dazzle, but to reveal something deeper: a contained energy, a quiet fire. Like the Fly Girls, these women carry a subtle yet undeniable power. They are reminders that being is enough. That presence, alone, is a statement.
They move through the calm of daily life — and yet they rise. So do I.
